The Town Sulfur Built

Asphalt paving in Sulphur means working in a town with a remarkable industrial history. Geologist Eugene Hilgard found sulfur here in 1867. Early shaft mining was deadly because of hydrogen sulfide gas, until Herman Frasch patented a process that melted the sulfur underground; the first molten sulfur reached the surface on Christmas Eve, 1894. The Union Sulphur Company drove the town's growth, and Sulphur incorporated in 1914.

Refinery neighborhoods

The Cities Service refinery, later Citgo, opened in 1943, and the Maplewood and Hollywood neighborhoods were developed to house its workers. Sulphur grew from 5,996 people in 1950 to 19,709 in 1980 and 21,809 in 2020. Many homes date from that postwar boom, and their driveways have been through decades of storms. Those often need the base rebuilt rather than another patch.

Plants and traffic

The city still depends heavily on refineries and petrochemical plants. Sasol bought more than 4 square miles of land, including nearly all of nearby Mossville. Contractor traffic, deliveries and shift changes mean commercial lots here wear fast at entrances and drive lanes. We build heavier sections where trucks turn and park.

Low and flat

Sulphur sits at about 13 feet of elevation. Water lingers after heavy rain, and driveways that hold puddles break down early. We set grades so water reaches the street or ditch and build a firm base.

Roads

I-10 runs through the city with exits 20, 21 and 23, and US 90 runs through the center as Napoleon Street. Lake Charles is 9 miles east. Businesses along Napoleon and near the interstate need lots that drain and are clearly marked.

What we do in Sulphur

  • Replace postwar driveways on a new base
  • Repair culvert crossings and edges
  • Pave and resurface business lots
  • Sealcoat and crack fill sound driveways
  • Restripe lots, including accessible spaces

Sulphur is its own city, so we confirm its requirements for culvert and right-of-way work before scheduling.

Storm-affected driveways

Sulphur took heavy wind and rain from Laura and Delta in 2020, and many properties saw heavy trucks hauling debris across driveways for months. Edges and aprons broke, and some driveways that looked fine afterward have since begun to crack and settle. We probe for soft base and rebuild only what has failed when that is enough.

Commercial lots

Restaurants, shops and service businesses along Napoleon Street, Ruth Street and near the interstate exits see constant traffic. We patch entrances, resurface worn lots and restripe, phased so you stay open.

A Sulphur estimate, step by step

We measure the driveway, note where water stands after rain, look at the culvert or curb at the street and probe for soft spots. Then you get a written quote that lists removal, base depth, asphalt thickness, any culvert work and edge work separately. For a typical two-car driveway of about 400 square feet, HomeGuide's national range is roughly $2,000 to $4,800; your price depends on what we find.

Keeping a Sulphur driveway in shape

After paving, the cheapest protection is simple: keep the culvert at the street clear of grass and debris so water keeps moving, fill cracks during dry spells, and sealcoat every few years once the surface turns gray.

Pricing

National guides list new asphalt driveways at about $5 to $12 or more per square foot and sealcoating at $1 to $2. Culvert work and soft-soil repair add to the total. Every quote is itemized.
