More Than Repainting Lines
Pavement markings and striping guide traffic and keep a lot safe, and restriping is when accessible parking must be brought up to date. The Department of Justice says that when a lot is restriped, accessible spaces must be provided in the number and design the 2010 ADA Standards require: the right count for the lot size, correct space and aisle widths, at least one van-accessible space for every six accessible spaces, and signs mounted at the right height.
What we mark
- Standard and angled stalls
- Accessible spaces, access aisles and symbols
- Arrows, stop bars and crosswalks
- Fire lanes, loading zones and curbs
- Numbers and stenciled words
Accessible space dimensions
Car spaces are at least 96 inches wide with a 60-inch aisle. Van spaces are 132 inches with a 60-inch aisle, or 96 inches with a 96-inch aisle. Spaces and aisles must be nearly level, no steeper than 1:48, and signs mounted with the bottom at least 60 inches up.
Restripe or new layout
Restriping follows existing lines. A new layout, after paving or a change in use, is measured from scratch; HomeGuide puts it at 20 to 50 percent more. It is also the time to improve flow or move accessible spaces closer to the entrance.
Timing
Paint needs clean, dry pavement. After paving or sealcoating, we mark once the surface is ready, in sections so the lot stays open.
Fading
Sun, rain and tires wear markings fast here. Many lots need restriping every year or two.
Fire lanes
Fire lane and curb marking requirements come from the local fire authority. We paint to the requirements you have been given.
How many accessible spaces?
The 2010 Standards scale accessible spaces to the lot size. A lot with 1 to 25 spaces needs at least one, and the count rises with size. We count your lot and lay out the number the table requires.
Good layouts
A good layout has clear drive lanes, logical flow, room to back out and accessible spaces on the shortest route to the entrance. On a new layout, we walk it with you before painting.
After sealcoating
Sealcoat covers existing markings, so lots need restriping after every seal. We schedule both together.
Paint and wear
Striping paint dries in about an hour in temperate weather, according to HomeGuide, but tires and sun wear it down. Drive lanes and arrows at busy entrances often need restriping more often than stalls.
Line visibility at night
Reflective additives can make lines easier to see at night. Ask about them for lots used after dark.
Restriping cost example
HomeGuide puts a 30- to 50-stall lot at about $500 to $1,200 for restriping, with mobilization of $150 to $350 often included. New layouts run 20 to 50 percent more.

Pavement Markings & Striping Questions
Do I have to update accessible spaces when I restripe?
Yes. The DOJ treats restriping as an alteration, so the 2010 Standards apply.
How many accessible spaces do I need?
It scales with lot size; a lot with 1 to 25 spaces needs at least one, and one in six accessible spaces must be van-accessible.
How often should a lot be restriped?
When lines are hard to see, often every year or two in this climate, and after any sealcoat.
Can you stripe overnight?
Often, yes, for businesses that cannot close during the day.
Can you add stall numbers?
Yes. HomeGuide lists stenciled letters and numbers at about $2 to $5 each.
Do you paint curbs?
Yes, at about $0.75 to $1.00 per linear foot in HomeGuide's figures.
