Asphalt Paving in Welsh, LA

A Railroad Prairie Town

Asphalt paving in Welsh is small-town work on the prairie. The homestead first belonged to Miles Welsh, a Pennsylvanian who moved to Louisiana for his health, and the town was platted in 1880 after the Louisiana Western Rail Road built a station there. Welsh incorporated on March 15, 1888. It was originally part of Imperial Calcasieu Parish and joined Jefferson Davis Parish in 1913.

Size

Welsh had 200 people in 1890, 2,416 in 1950 and 3,333 in 2020, on about 6.4 square miles at about 23 feet of elevation.

Older homes, rural lots

In town, many homes are established, with driveways that have been patched over the years. Outside town, larger lots and farms have long gravel drives. We rebuild old driveways on a new base and convert gravel where it makes sense.

Prairie ground

The flat prairie drains slowly. A firm base and good grading keep driveways from rutting.

Typical Welsh projects

  • Driveway replacement
  • Gravel conversions
  • Church and business lots
  • Sealcoating

Pricing

National guides list new asphalt at about $5 to $12 or more per square foot and sealcoating at $1 to $2.

Rules at the road

Welsh sets its own requirements in town; Jefferson Davis Parish handles parish roads.

Churches and schools

Welsh churches, schools and community buildings need lots that drain and are clearly marked. We patch, sealcoat and stripe them, scheduled around services and events.

Rural drives

Farm drives around Welsh should sit slightly above the surrounding ground with ditches on the sides. We shape them so water leaves the drive.

Maintenance

Seal every few years, fill cracks promptly and keep culverts clear.

Concrete driveways

Some older homes have cracked concrete driveways. Asphalt cannot simply go over them; the concrete comes out and a new base goes in.

Planning

We visit, measure, check drainage and the culvert, and give you an itemized quote.

Typical prices

HomeGuide's national range for a 300-square-foot driveway is about $1,500 to $3,600. Removal of old concrete adds to that.

Timing

We pave on a dry base and seal in dry weather. Rural jobs are scheduled after dry stretches so trucks do not rut the property.

Small jobs

Many Welsh jobs are small: a short driveway or a few repairs. Industry minimums often apply, and we tell you ours up front.

Railroad-era streets

Older streets near the old station have narrow lots. We plan equipment access carefully.

Paving on the prairie

Welsh sits in flat rice and cattle country. Water moves slowly, so even small low spots in a driveway hold puddles. We set grades carefully and make sure the culvert at the road carries water away.

Typical Welsh projects

  • Driveway replacement on a new base
  • Gravel conversions on rural lots
  • Church and school lots
  • Sealcoating and crack filling

Scheduling

We group Welsh work with Jennings and Iowa.

Typical sizes

Most in-town Welsh driveways run 300 to 600 square feet; rural drives can run several thousand. HomeGuide's national range for 600 square feet is about $3,000 to $7,200.

Edges

Asphalt edges at an open ditch break off if they are not supported. We leave a compacted shoulder.

Scheduling

We group Welsh work with Jennings and Iowa jobs. Most driveways take two to four days.
